Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in their own right begin to appear in “still lifes,” a genre that comes to light at the beginning of the 17th century. Later, painters’ interest in the floral world, especially among the Impressionists, grows ever greater, as it provides an extraordinary opportunity to capture chromatic and luminous vibrations. Thus, flowers begin to appear not only in vases but also immersed in their natural landscape. While at the beginning of its history it provided painters with a pretext to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
The painter Chiara Turina succeeded in bringing the watercolor technique to the highest heights of formal perfection. In her work, indeed, the precision of a naturalistic rendering faithfully true to sensory perception combines with the lightness typical of diluted color. We can appreciate this even in these “Peonies,” where the use of watercolor is so refined that it conveys the form of the flowers and foliage solely through an elegant interplay of color. The coexistence of the various elements in a confined space allows the artist to make the most of the aesthetic peculiarities of diluted color. And so the floral composition resolves into a light play of glazes, of semi-transparent harmonies, of tone-on-tone in a kaleidoscopic and light-filled whole.
Chiara Turina was a painter from Roverbella who passed away in 2015. Specializing in the watercolor technique, her body of work focused primarily on the representation of flowers and gardens. Her exploration of these subjects, which provide inspiration for compositions of great chromatic exuberance, led Chiara Turina to excel in the art of watercolor. Her technique reached an extremely high level of formal execution, so that perfect naturalistic rendering combines with the lyricism and lightness inherent to watercolor painting.
