Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations for artists of every era. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a research into space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then on the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century; up to the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

As we can see from the analysis of this extremely exemplary work, Cavalli's conception of landscape is essentially Expressionist. The artist remains anchored to a type of figurative representation of the subject, but such representation is not aimed at a naturalistic rendering. The artist, in fact, transcends the sensory data in favor of a remarkable emotional, almost spiritual tension of the landscape. For this reason, the objects are subjected to a marked formal synthesis through a very dense, at times material, pictorial application. The figuration appears compressed and distorted in a non-uniform space, but constructed according to different directional lines. The artist's palette also reflects the desire to overcome the simple sensory data. With the prevalence of blue and violet tones, the painter decidedly leans towards a subjective interpretation of the view.

The artist Cavalli, in his conception of artistic creation, shows a deep connection with the historical avant-gardes of the early twentieth century and with Expressionism in particular. His pictorial application is remarkably synthetic and abstracts the forms of objects to achieve a strongly emotional rendering of reality.
