Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
This lithograph, which is nothing less than a reflection on the female body, is a perfect example of Bruno Cassinari's artistic language. First, he begins with a synthesis of forms that is undoubtedly a product of the Expressionist avant-garde. The bodies are reduced to the essential, in this case outlined by a sinuous black outline. Furthermore, one can see how the composition was constructed on different perspectives, multiple viewpoints, which also corresponds to Cassinari's reflections on Cubism, particularly the synthetic form of Picasso's Guernica.
Bruno Cassinari, Piacenza 1912 - Milan 1992. He trained first at the Piacenza School of Art and later at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. In 1939, he joined the Corrente group along with Guttuso, Migneco, Vedova, Birolli, Treccani, and Morlotti. In 1941, Elio Vittorini recognized his talent and curated his first solo exhibition. All his work is characterized by an expressionist synthesis combined with a reflection on Cubist deconstruction. In 1949, he moved to Antibes, where he met Pablo Picasso, Chagalle, Matisse, and Braque.
