Carmela Roccella - Peacock and Cat

The representation of animals in art has extremely ancient origins, dating back to prehistoric cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the records of several ancient civilizations. It is especially during the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that depictions of animals become widespread as true-to-life portraits, both in finished works and in sketchbooks. The presence of animals as subjects in art will remain constant up to the contemporary era.

The style of the artist Carmela Roccella draws on a naive conception of artistic creation, characterized by a simplification of the subjects represented that is at once conscious and instinctive, with the aim of restoring the primal values of purity and simplicity to the representation. However, the simplification of reality carried out by the artist also incorporates several creative elements, most noticeable in the complexity of the drawing and, above all, in the chromatic exploration. Carmela Roccella’s typical pictorial approach has a structural quality that enhances the volumes and existential complexity of the subjects, even when they are animals. The color is also excessive, at times unnatural, but always selected in a way that is consistent with the overall composition and attuned to sparkling tones.

The painter Carmela Roccella has always displayed a distinctly naive approach in her style. Her desire to seek simplification in representation is evident, with the aim of imbuing the work of art with the primal values of purity and innocence.
