Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.
The concepts of application and color are fundamental to Carlo Hollesch's artistic practice. His compositions generally have a linear framework, which in this work is very complex. A black line, animated and sinuous, defines the shape and volume of the objects, giving the composition a very sustained rhythm. The rest is all application, expressed in large touches of bright color. As we can see, this still life has the character of an ostentatious descriptive realism, but the artist's interpretation is essentially expressionistic. Indeed, when it comes to palette, Carlo Hollesch always stands out for his use of bright palettes, with almost violent and decidedly expressionistic tones.
Carlo Hollesch was born in Pula in 1926 and died in Venice in 1978. His artistic research initially led him to a metaphysical language with almost fairy-tale-like overtones. He later based his style on the decomposition of the image through pictorial application, almost a kind of divisionism, but with a distinctly expressionist approach. In addition to exhibiting his works in numerous exhibitions, he participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial.
