Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of maternity is linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the entire history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears from the very beginnings of medieval painting and remains a constant subject as long as religious themes were prevalent in artistic production (that is, until the 19th century when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common among contemporary artists to treat the iconography of maternity without directly linking it to Christianity.
The artist of this work stands out for an exceptional technique within a classicist interpretation of the subject. The artist pursues full naturalism in a form, however, that is very smooth and does not give in to excessive painterly effects. In this way, the subjects seem to have an extremely precious surface, almost like porcelain, nevertheless livened by a very light sfumato. We can also notice the same tendency towards a smooth plasticism in the complex definition of the draperies, which also stand out for the luminous reflections they emanate. From a compositional point of view, the tight cropping of the scene is very interesting, focusing attention on the relationship between mother and child in a calm expression of feelings of an intimate and domestic nature.
