Description of the work
Description of the work
The work shows a strong Expressionist tendency, emphasizing the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to shout one’s moods to the world and display them passionately. Formally, this translates into a sketchy rendering of figures, characterized by highly energetic and dynamic lines, as well as the use of a bold color palette. Such characteristics can be found in the historical avant-garde movements of Expressionism: Fauvism and the German Die Brücke movement.
Gustavo Boldrini’s style is profoundly Expressionist. He begins with a brutal formal synthesis that reduces the subject to the bare essentials of basic painterly gestures. Thus, even in this work we can appreciate how the structure of the subject is defined by a broad black stroke, with curvilinear and sinuous movement. The color is applied in solid areas. The hues are aggressive and intense, following the finest Fauvist-Expressionist tradition, and do not respect natural reality but instead carry a spiritual and emotional significance.
Gustavo Boldrini was born in Venice in 1927 and died in Salsomaggiore Terme in 1987. His works have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions. In 1955, in Paris, his work was shown at the “VI Salon de la Jeune Peinture,” and that same year at the “XIX Biennale Nazionale d’Arte Città di Milano,” held at the Palazzo della Permanente. Between 1955 and 1956, his work was exhibited in Rome at the “VII Quadriennale nazionale d’arte.” In 1956, it was shown in Venice at the “Esposizione internazionale d’arte di Venezia.” His participation in four editions of the “Biennale d’Arte Triveneta” and in 1959 in an edition of the “Biennale nazionale” in San Marino should also be remembered.
