Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the engraving can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The print displays the precision of drawing typical of an illustration. All the details are elegantly rendered, with a few curious touches. Even in the use of light and the accentuation of shadows, the author demonstrates a highly skilled and gifted hand.
The engraving was created by Bertrand, a mid-nineteenth-century artist who displays a high level of academic technique. He remains faithful to the printmaking genre, creating a completely objective composition using an illustration technique. The author's goal is to reproduce as many details as accurately as possible and evoke a sense of intimacy and curiosity in the viewer.
