These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.

The work displays a marked expressionist vocation. Formally, this translates into a cursory rendering of the figure, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a color palette that is not in keeping with sensory reality. In this specific case, we note how the figure is rendered with a black, tormented line that synthesizes its forms with just a few touches. Formally, the composition is achieved with a textural, almost rough, application of white, which gives prominence to the figure and creates the work's space.
