Basile - Untitled

Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations for artists of every era. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a study of space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then with the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century; and finally with the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The work highlights the artist's post-impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely constructed through color, and the brushstrokes have a remarkable structural value. The painter's aim is not to reproduce the sensory data of the landscape, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke comes into play, rich in texture, which, despite the simplicity of the representation, breaks down space into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life on the subject. Thus we can see how the clump of agaves in the foreground is built from a series of large, intersecting brushstrokes. Meanwhile, the slopes in the background reveal their volumes through the overlapping of different shades of earthy colors.

The artist Basile demonstrates a remarkable painting technique based on a textured application of color and a composition of broad brushstrokes inspired by Post-Impressionism.
