Description of the work
Description of the work
The “Still Life” genre emerged at the beginning of the 17th century. It consists of depicting compositions of inanimate subjects, in most cases flowers or fruit. While at the beginning of its history it provided painters with an opportunity to attempt a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, in contemporary art “Still Life” also becomes a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as will happen, for example, in Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the profound exploration of objects will be aimed at a conceptual representation, taking it beyond the mere sensory data. The artist Baer devoted himself deeply to a pictorial production focused precisely on still lifes and floral compositions.
The style developed by Baer in his compositions of fruit and flowers highlights a post-impressionist maturity: his exploration, in fact, focused precisely on the theme of still lifes and floral compositions to reach remarkable expressive heights in this type of stylistic register. The compositions are all compressed in the foreground, without allowing any spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to reproduce the sensory data of the flowers and fruits, but to capture their very essence, their substance. To this end, the brushstroke comes into play, rich in matter, which, despite the essentiality of the representation, plumpens the objects, breaks them down on different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life upon them. The sensory data, therefore, is completely surpassed in a complex conception of painting where the artist's own gesturality also plays a fundamental role. Even from a more purely aesthetic point of view, then, the composition always resolves in a harmonious dialogue of chromatic zones, given by the balanced arrangement of colors. Generally, Baer's palette is composed of very bright shades of warm colors.
Baer is the pseudonym of Ermenegildo Barizza. He is a painter who developed an in-depth exploration of the representation of objects and their perception through the genre of still life and floral compositions. His pictorial language links back to post-impressionist currents according to his own original inclination.
