Description of the work
Description of the work
The diptych features two traditional Bunraku puppets, the Japanese puppet theater. This is a very distinctive type of puppet, two-dimensional, but the presence of sticks attached to the limbs clearly indicates a theatrical function. The characters depicted are likely two warriors, characterized in a caricatured and grotesque manner.
Formally, the two figures are crafted in a highly distinctive manner. Crafted through a refined assembly of parts, they display a rather pronounced caricatural expressionism that harks back to the tradition of Japanese theater masks. The slender limbs are grafted onto deformed bodies that almost resemble insects. The grotesque faces have features somewhere between comical and monstrous. The work is a highly prized artifact of traditional Japanese culture.
The two puppets were made by an excellent and refined traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
