Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
In this work, we can appreciate Attilio Pratella's exquisite pictorial craftsmanship. His touch is quick and concise, and, endowed with a profound impressionistic influence, imbues the entire scene with delicate luminous vibrations. The entire work is imbued with a strong sense of freshness and immediacy. In such a context, the role of color is obviously fundamental, and the painter exploits its tonal values to create a coherent atmospheric picture characterized by a warm yet subtle tone, perfectly suited to the intimate domesticity of the setting depicted.
Attilio Pratella was born in Lugo in 1856 and died in Naples in 1949. He initially enrolled at the Academy of Bologna. He then moved to Naples, where the guidance of Morelli, Palizzi, and Puccinelli was crucial to his development. He can be considered an heir to the Posillipo School, although he transcended its picturesque aspect to create a production of great formal purity. From 1881 until the second decade of the twentieth century, he exhibited regularly at the Neapolitan promotrici.
