Description of the work
Description of the work
In art history, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist’s aim is to represent an object that corresponds to phenomenal reality while simultaneously being imbued with hidden, symbolic meanings, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, characterized by an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic use of color.
As we can observe, the artist who created this painting necessarily begins with reality in their conception of the artistic process, which is then transfigured through the expressive and symbolic potential of color. In this work, the artist seems to draw on the poetics of the object typical of New Dada, transforming an ordinary, everyday item into a work of art (famous in this regard are Arman’s experiments with violins). However, in this painting, the operation is carried out entirely through paint, and the object, rather than being physically placed on the canvas, is reproduced. The application of paint clearly refers to a gestural style typical of American Abstract Expressionism, with the addition of graphic markings of high symbolic value. In particular, the repetition of the bow creates a geometric pattern that introduces a further element of hermeticism.
The artist behind this painting is characterized by a figurative language aimed, however, at an experimental aesthetic. Their conception of the artistic process is thus linked to the poetics of New Dada and Abstract Expressionism, within their own personal definition, which also implies a certain symbolic sense of geometry.
