Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject draws on the iconography of the mocking of Christ, widespread in Western art history. It is an episode of the Passion in which Jesus is exposed to the insults and abuse of the crowd. This theme was widely developed from medieval art, often in the version reproduced here by Silone, with Christ's body at the center of the work, surrounded by the heads of those who mock him. The subject is powerfully symbolic, highlighting, through the contrast between Christ's beauty and the ugliness of the men around him, the grandeur of Jesus' redemptive sacrifice compared to the brutality of evil.
Respecting the tradition and symbolic value of the iconography of the mocking of Christ, Arnaldo Silone, in this bas-relief, creates a sharp contrast between the figure of Christ and the figures insulting him. The figure of Jesus, tied to the stake, is depicted in a superb idealization with a classicist flavor. With his excellent technique, Silone depicts an anatomically drawn body with a great sense of plasticity and harmony. In contrast, the thugs surrounding him display a sudden shift in tone toward a highly expressionistic realism, rendering these figures as caricatured masks.
Arnaldo Filone, born in Milan in 1915 and died in Riccione in 1985, was a renowned painter and sculptor. His work, based on a solid academic background, is distinguished by a revival of traditional artistic practice and a highly classical taste. In this sense, he stands out for his excellent technique, capable of achieving a perfectly naturalistic rendering of his subjects.
