Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic currents. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. The painter Antonio Tamburro has created a pictorial language that combines figuration with a strong abstract expressionist component. His favorite subjects are scenes of everyday life or compositions inspired by jazz music, as in this case, where the perception of reality is communicated through the expressive potential of color.
Tamburro's work clearly shows the influence of American Abstract Expressionism, particularly Pollock and Action Painting. His work features a strong gestural component, leading him to fill the painting's surface with brushstrokes, forming a chaotic vortex of color. But the chaos is only apparent, as Tamburro effectively controls his gestures in a balance of symbols (including alphabetic ones) and colors. Ultimately, from this vortex of color emerges the figuration, the painting's subject, which blends harmoniously with the painter's gestures while maintaining the composition's balance. This painting's use of light is extraordinary, truly making the saxophonist emerge from the dark background like a spotlight.
Antonio Tamburro was born in Isernia in 1948. After art school, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, under Giovanni Brancaccio, and then in Rome, under Franco Gentilini. Throughout his long career in contemporary art, Tamburro can be considered a rebellious artist, intolerant of traditional and strictly academic teachings. His spirit leads him to a style of painting that denounces a consumerist society, expressing moods that are sometimes melancholic, sometimes full of irony. But color is the key to his artistic expression. The list of solo exhibitions he has held throughout his life, both in Italy and abroad, is endless. Finally, Rome, his adopted city, has established him with a retrospective at Palazzo Venezia and a book published by Mondadori.
