Description of the work
Description of the work
The clown was a popular subject among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Typically, the interpretation of this subject is similar for all artists who tackle it: the clown appears with his makeup designed to evoke laughter and hilarity, but instead displays a melancholic expression. This contrast is intended to spark an empathetic dialogue with the viewer.
In this painting, Antonio Squicciarini seems to be balancing a simplified figurative style with a lively expressionism. The subject appears simplified and two-dimensional, defined by a thick black line that highlights its forms. The result is a pictorial composition with the verve of an illustration. The choice of a very strong color palette confirms this approach.
Antonio Squicciarini, a painter originally from Bari, was born in 1957. His career developed primarily in Milan, where he organized numerous exhibitions in nightclubs, hence his nickname, "the painter of the night." Also in Milan, he founded, along with other colleagues, the "New Realism" group. His encounter with Marc Chagall was crucial to his development. In 1984, he created the set designs for Federico Fellini's film "Ginger and Fred."
