Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical values and can be defined, in some way, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be linked to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Böcklin, or Puvis de Chavannes, who, while using a substantially figurative language, created intellectually complex iconography full of symbolic and allegorical references.
The lithograph is highly representative of Antonio Nocera's style. The artist maintains a connection with phenomenal reality, but approaches it from an expressionist and symbolist perspective. Antonio Nocera's compositions are subject to a strong stylization; consequently, the entire structure of the work is defined by a set of very bold, sinuous lines. This also gives rise to the elegant distortions of the subjects, which stretch out and lose their individual characteristics. Color plays a minor role, compact and devoid of painterly effects; with its shaded tones, it is the perfect complement to Nocera's drawing.
Antonio Nocera was born in Caivano in 1949 and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. His artistic career developed mainly in Milan, where he has lived since 1970 and where he frequents the artistic circles of Brera and the Navigli. His fame is now international, thanks to the numerous exhibitions around the world where he has exhibited his paintings. His themes are drawn from fairy tales and legends, with the aim of creating symbolic subjects that have a connection with current reality.
