Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this ceramic painting, Antonio Mancini confirms his remarkable pictorial skill. The half-length figure is rendered with remarkable mobility and rapidity of strokes, yet it creates a tangible figure. This figure also reveals Antonio Mancini's profound realism, which does not compromise on any kind of idealization. The man appears in a completely casual pose, seemingly taken by surprise by the painter's hand.
Antonio Mancini was a Roman painter born in 1852 and died in 1930. At the age of twelve, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, where he studied under Palizzi and Morelli. A trip to Venice, which deeply influenced his development, was also crucial; he was deeply impressed by the tonalism of the Venetian masters. In Rome, he opened his own studio, adhering to the Verismo movement. In 1875, he moved to Paris, where he met Degas and Manet. In 1883, he returned to Rome permanently. In 1920, the Venice Biennale held a solo exhibition of his work. In 1929, he was accepted into the Academy of Italy.
