Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations for artists of every era. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a research into space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then on the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century; up to the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
For the painter Antonio Di Michele, naturalistic rendering is a fundamental component of his artistic practice. His main goal is to transfer onto the canvas a realistic and immediate image of the landscape. For this reason, his artistic practice is essentially based on a faithful recording of sensory data which, in addition to an accurate reproduction from life of the subject, also draws on a vigorous lyrical sensibility that leads him to charge his views with luminous and atmospheric vibrations. Indeed, even though, at a formal level, Di Michele's language remains substantially figurative, his touch is extremely painterly, tending to guarantee freshness and immediacy of execution, according to the impressionistic principles of en plein air painting. Antonio Di Michele's palette, moreover, still reflects his will for realism, as it is based on a range of brown and muted tones, which draw on the simplicity of a peasant world, the protagonist of his works.
Antonio Di Michele was born in Casilenti in 1953, but lives in Borgo Bussana Vecchia in Sanremo. He is fundamentally an impressionist painter who has received several awards in his career (the Golden Lion Award at the Sanremo Casino, the European International Award, the International Trophy in Limone Piemonte). His works are found in various collections in Italy and abroad.
