Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
The work is a typical example of Antonio Del Donno's artistic output. The canvas's surface is encrusted with a thick layer of material, revealing the artist's gesture. This gesture consists of creating a latticework charged with the energy imparted by the artist's hand. The reused object, a feature of many of Antonio Del Donno's works, is also present. As usual, the object bears letters, semantic symbols with a strong symbolic value that, in the informal context of the work, heightens the sense of incommunicability.
Antonio Del Donno is a painter from Benevento, born in 1927. He debuted in the 1950s, initially with a figurative style. By the mid-1950s, his painting had undergone a profound shift toward gesturality, devoid of any reference to figuration. After the 1960s, he also showed interest in New Dadaist influences, reusing figures or newspaper headlines. In the 1980s and 1990s, his style would become a combination of gesture and object.
