Antonio D'Abramo, Wood: a Malleable Material

Antonio D'Abramo has a special relationship with the material he has chosen as his medium of expression: wood. He began sculpting this material in his early adolescence and continued until he became an established artist characterized by his own highly personal poetics. Sculpting wood means rough-hewing and carving a hard material to create forms that communicate the artist's inner world. But for Antonio D'Abramo, this process takes on an uncommon naturalness: it's as if the wood, in his hands, were a soft, malleable material that the artist can shape as he pleases. D'Abramo's sculptures vividly take on the appearance of ductile structures, possessing almost the elastic properties of bodies that can be stretched or tapered at will. This means being able to infuse an extraordinary dynamism and vital movement into the wood material, which leads us to appreciate, first and foremost, Antonio D'Abramo's extraordinary technical prowess, evident in his remarkable attention to detail and the overall formal rendering of his works. But the discussion of the "malleability of wood" is more deeply connected, on a conceptual level, to the Apulian sculptor's own aesthetic. Indeed, Antonio D'Abramo always draws his sculptures from nature, primarily the human figure, but this is deformed by the artist in pursuit of his decidedly expressive goals. Antonio D'Abramo's humanity is made up of elongated limbs performing unnatural contortions, sometimes even the figures are dismembered and the artist uses only body parts moving in an irrational spatiality. All this, combined with the sculptor's aforementioned technical skill in meticulously capturing anatomical and physiognomic detail, imbues D'Abramo's works with an extraordinary empathetic vigor. Thus, anatomical deformations combine with dramatic expressions to create images that are extremely eloquent in their ability to communicate emotions. Even when depicting only details (a head, a few hands), D'Abramo's subjects display their expressiveness in a powerful, even dramatic manner. For this reason, his art can be defined as thoroughly Expressionist, both in the means and the aims of his creative process.
