Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
In this work, Antonello Capozzi confirms his artistic language, based on an informal aesthetic, yet filtered through a personal reworking. Capozzi's informal style has two constitutive elements that recur throughout his work. First, the thick, textured brushstroke that becomes structure and generates the painting's main content with its instinctive movement. Then, the painter's gesture, in a sort of over-the-top Action Painting, allows a dense dripping pattern to flow across the canvas, undoing the previously created structure and reconfiguring it. Capozzi's signature color palette features shades of blue, purple, and red against decontextualized gray spaces.
Antonello Capozzi is a painter, sculptor, printmaker, and draftsman born in Pisticci, Basilicata, in 1972. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. Capozzi's canvases testify to new aesthetic codes. They are the product of a rapidly evolving reality in search of a new language.
