Description of the work
Description of the work
Themes related to astronomy or science fiction in art can, in many cases, be traced back to the typical concerns of surrealist aesthetics, insofar as the existence of other worlds or parallel dimensions can be linked to our subconscious. When, however, science fiction becomes an exaltation of technology, Futurism cannot help but be identified as its origin, as it made the celebration of progress one of its main themes. Concurrently with the development of the science fiction genre in cinema around the 1960s, some painters also began to devote themselves to this subject in art, such as the renowned Chesley Bonestell.
Drawing constant reference to surrealist aesthetics, we can observe how Antonello Rizza's paintings dedicated to the theme of the Universe always present a paradoxically hyperrealistic style. The science fiction landscape, in fact, is represented in a totally objective manner, avoiding atmospheric effects and overly pronounced pictorialism. The view is thus shaken by irrepressible and dynamic forces, so that the only fixed points are the perfect spheres of the planets. The entire landscape is traversed by flashing beams of light that pierce the atmosphere in a truly evocative way.
Antonello Rizza was born in Noto in 1926 and passed away in Rome in 2012. Nicknamed “The Painter of the Universe,” his canvases mainly dealt with themes related to astrophysics, which he interpreted with a hyperrealistic figurative style. His name appeared in the Bolaffi Catalog in 1975 and 1978. A permanent exhibition of his works has been set up in the municipal library in Noto.
