Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is a Russian icon depicting the Mother of God (Mary) with the Baby Jesus in her arms. This image is part of the "Madonna of Tenderness" type, an iconography that emphasizes the profound affectionate bond between Mother and Child. Mary holds the Child in her right arm. The Baby Jesus is depicted affectionately, his cheek resting against that of his Mother, in a gesture of great intimacy. Mary wears the traditional dark red cloak, a color symbolizing her royalty and future sacrifice. The Child wears a bright red tunic. The background is ruined, but was originally gold, representing divine light and eternity. To the sides of the central figure are four small, full-length figures of saints, likely patron saints.
The style is the canonical one of Russian Orthodox sacred art. It is characterized by two-dimensional, stylized figures, typical of icons, with serious, contemplative expressions. The technique used is tempera painting on wood with a gold background. The colors are applied with clean, precise lines. The folds of the clothing are rendered schematically to give volume and spirituality to the figures. Although the style is deeply rooted in Orthodox tradition, the work displays a certain chromatic vivacity and expressive sweetness that place it in a period when Russian icon art had developed more autonomous and "modern" traits compared to the more rigid Byzantine models, while maintaining their sacred nature.
The icon was created by an anonymous artist, as is customary for most traditional icons, where the focus is on the sacred subject rather than the artist's identity. Iconographers worked in workshops, following precise rules to ensure the theological and stylistic accuracy of the image. It is not possible to attribute the work to a specific name, but it can be said that the unknown artist mastered the techniques and pictorial canons of Russian iconographic art. Its execution reflects a mature tradition, fitting fully into the vast and revered genre of Russian Madonnas (such as the types of the Vladimir or Kazan Madonna).
