Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of maternity is linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the entire history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears from the very beginnings of medieval painting and remains a constant subject as long as religious themes predominated in artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of maternity without directly linking it to Christianity.
Anna Nespolino's pictorial production has a profound classical inspiration, drawing on Renaissance aesthetics in an almost quotationist manner. In particular, the Neapolitan painter exalts the aesthetic values of the mature, 16th-century phase of the Renaissance, and the master she seems to look up to most is Raphael. Indeed, in Anna Nespolino's Madonnas with Child, we find the same grace, the same sweetness, but also the same monumentality as the Urbino-born painter. Furthermore, in Anna Nespolino's works, there is also the desire to clothe her work in an antique patina, using old papers as a support and skillfully imitating the appearance of a sketch or a preparatory drawing to add the charm of the unfinished. This entire quotationist operation is carried out by the artist with great technical skill, evident in the complexity of the brushwork and the definition of the volumes, which makes her works unique.
Anna Nespolino was born in Naples in 1960. She trained in the Neapolitan city under the guidance of great masters. In addition to painting, she also dedicated herself to photography, design, and printmaking. Today she teaches Art History and artistic techniques to middle school students without neglecting her passion for painting. Her artistic research is inspired by the Renaissance pictorial tradition in a highly interesting operation of quotationism and aesthetic recontextualization.
