Angelo Turin - Figure of a Woman

Angelo Turin, born in Dresano in 1929, is a painter who lives and works in Melegnano. He has a career spanning over 45 years, featuring numerous solo exhibitions. Angelo Turin's paintings are populated by clowns, horses, and ballerinas, subjects he reiterates throughout his canvases to refine his expressive language. Indeed, one of the most salient features of Angelo Turin's work is his constant modulation of his strokes, yet within a perfectly recognizable style. The artist always moves within the framework of a marked formal synthesis, directly transforming sensory reality into pictorial gesture. In this way, the representation acquires remarkable expressive qualities, coinciding with the artist's touch and the movements of his hand. And this is the most important aspect, since Angelo Turin's brushstroke is extremely versatile and dynamic, as can be seen from an analysis of his works, especially those from the late 1970s, where, in the "Abstract Compositions" series, the concepts of matter and gesture prevail. In some works, such as "Horses with Temple," however, the artist remains closer to a faithful representation of phenomenal reality, yet nature is nevertheless elaborated with a dense atmosphericism that corrodes the space and the subjects, fusing them into a coherent pictorial continuity. Furthermore, another peculiarity of Turin's style is already evident: his tendency toward a chromatic minimalism based on the use of a few cold tones. In other works, we can fully appreciate Turin's poetics (Pierrot, Cavalli): the references to the subject remain present, but the forms begin to expand and, at the same time, abstract through a gestural and densely coloured pictorial stroke. In other works, the artist's energy seems to prevail over representation, as in "Figure of a Woman," "Horse," "Horse with Rider," and "Face of a Boy." In these works, the composition comes to life primarily through nervous strokes, interacting in a powerful yet balanced expressive interplay because Turin's line manages to be both rough and calligraphic, depending on the compositional needs.
