Description of the work
Description of the work
The clown was an extremely popular subject among genre painters in the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Usually, artists who tackle this subject interpret it in a similar way: the clown appears in makeup designed to evoke laughter and merriment, yet wears a melancholy expression. This contrast is intended to create an empathetic dialogue with the viewer. The clown was also favored by many painters for another reason of a formal nature. Indeed, his striking makeup and multicolored clothing provided painters with an opportunity to create original color harmonies.
The theme of the clown is extensively explored in Angelo Manini's work, which includes both more melancholy versions and others, like this one, that are exceptionally lively and sparkling. To achieve this descriptive and narrative vitality, the artist develops the subject's design using a bold black outline. This allows him to unleash his creativity and inventiveness, imbuing the clown with many amusingly realistic details, rendered with precision. Color then plays its part in maintaining the overall liveliness of the work. For this reason, the artist avoids overly painterly effects, opting instead for a compact and clear application. The surface of the work thus resolves into a fresh polychromy of cheerful, brilliant tones.
Angelo Manini is a Roman painter with a remarkable technique through which he creates figurative paintings, especially landscapes and clowns. He achieves an excellent naturalistic rendering in his works thanks also to the quality of his application, full of luminous and atmospheric vibrations, and to a strong realist vein that he enlivens with his creativity.
