Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Amedeo Merello's landscape works demonstrate the artist's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely compressed into the foreground, allowing no spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the subject, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, and despite the essentiality of the representation, it fleshes out the objects, registering the vibrations of light and life upon them. The sensory aspect, therefore, is completely transcended in a complex conception of pictorial practice in which the artist's gestures themselves play a fundamental role.

Amedeo Merello was a Genoese painter from 1890 to 1979. Equipped with an excellent academic education, he initially focused on religious subjects. However, his true calling was painting from life, which he mastered with extraordinary skill, both in landscapes and still lifes, thanks in part to his post-Impressionist heritage and his extraordinary use of color. He participated in numerous exhibitions, especially in Genoa, Savona, and Turin, but also in various events throughout Italy and abroad.
