Aligi Sassu - Horses in the Sea

The horse motif is widely recognized throughout Sassu's pictorial output today. The animal, already present in battle scenes, is depicted in a natural context devoid of any human presence. The inspiration for these compositions, rich in dynamism, energy, and naturalism, came both from his youthful vision of Boccioni's The City Rises, in Fedele Azari's apartment, and from his exposure to Delacroix's works during his French experience (Paris, 1934-35).
