Description of the work
Description of the work
In art history, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist’s aim is to represent an object that corresponds to phenomenal reality while simultaneously being imbued with hidden, symbolic meanings, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, characterized by an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic use of color.
The style of artist Alfio Rapisardi is the result of a refined fusion of tradition and avant-garde. Alfio Rapisardi’s artistic exploration begins with the Italian pictorial tradition, more specifically the Tuscan Renaissance, but he applies this tradition to entirely contemporary expressive concerns. The Renaissance legacy in Alfio Rapisardi’s work is evident in the rational spirit that guides the development of his compositions. Rapisardi’s works are the result of a perfect balance of forms and colors, arranged with a profound sense of geometry. Within the structure of the work, everything is governed by a rational spirit, yet this rationality also manifests in a thorough analysis of the subjects, underpinned by contemporary artistic concerns. The objects are deconstructed, almost broken down into a complex space that looks to Cubism. Furthermore, everything is subjected to a striking synthesis that abstracts the forms, always in that geometric and rationalist spirit that shapes the entirety of Alfio Rapisardi’s work.
Alfio Rapisardi was a Florentine artist, born in 1929 and passed away in 2018. His career officially began in 1956 with a solo exhibition at the “Strozzina” gallery. In 1960 and 1962, he participated in the “Fiorino” exhibition. He won the competition to create the altarpiece for the church of the Scolopi. His works are held at the Kessel Museum alongside names such as Gauguin, Cézanne, and Picasso.
