Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since classical antiquity, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been one of the main objectives of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, transcending all eras and stylistic movements. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations characteristic of the Renaissance and various forms of classicism, which aim for a faithful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central subject in the new aesthetic conceptions introduced by the historical avant-gardes, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
In his sculptures, Wolfgang Alexander Kossuth refers to a classical and traditional conception of artistic creation. As we can see in this work, the sculptor pursues a completely naturalistic rendering, which he achieves through his remarkable technique. The artist manages to emphasize the subject's volumes in a balanced relationship within the entire human figure. There is great precision in the physiognomy, with a certain degree of idealization. To achieve greater expressiveness, however, while remaining within the realm of naturalism, Kossuth applies slight but noticeable distortions to the human figure. Indeed, in order to achieve an artificial elegance, the artist tends, with a refined Mannerist taste, to unnaturally elongate the forms. In the case of the sculpture “Aspettando,” the narrowing and elongation of the figure are particularly evident in the perfect oval of the face and the ostentatious thinness of the body, which is accentuated by the width of the dress. This linearity and stylization of the figure are reflected in the complex interplay of movements and the intricate pose adopted by the subject.
Wolfgang Alexander Kossuth is an artist of German origin born in Prfonten in 1947. An eclectic personality, he has dedicated his entire life to art, not only through sculpture, but also through music, literature, and dance. The human figure is always at the center of his research, in a fundamentally natural and harmonious interpretation that looks to classical art.
