Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced).
The composition of this work is clearly inspired by Byzantine art, whose language it masterfully interprets. Indeed, the work has all the characteristics of an ancient icon interpreted through an original gold inlay technique on bonded glass. The Madonna and Child group is crafted with a high degree of abstraction. The figures are frozen in a hieratic fixity and have a supernatural appearance. The Madonna's facial features are particularly oversized, and her large eyes reflect her divine nature. The composition is characterized by accentuated linearity with a broken rhythm. The decorative motifs, consisting of lozenge-shaped motifs and punched patterns, are also noteworthy.
Alberto Udovici is an artisan artist of Istrian origin. He is internationally renowned for his works using the gold-on-glass technique. This technique, developed by Alberto Udovici himself, requires a high level of technical skill to execute.
