Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the heart of artistic exploration. Since classical antiquity, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been one of the primary goals of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, transcending all eras and stylistic movements. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations characteristic of the Renaissance and various forms of classicism, which aim for a faithful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic conceptions introduced by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
Alberto Casarotti's painting style was influenced by his close association with the "Corrente" group, and especially by Renato Birolli. His training therefore took place in an environment that, in opposition to the traditionalism of Novecento, advocated a return to the avant-garde, particularly to the language of Expressionism. In keeping with this approach, Alberto Casarotti's painting involves a high degree of synthesis in the treatment of subjects. They are as if stripped of their material substance, revealing their purest essence, defined by the power of color and the painterly gesture. Objects, therefore, reduced to their essentials within a two-dimensional space, are evoked through a very fluid line, typical of Corrente's reinterpretation of Expressionism, in a vibrant representation of vital energy. This energy determines the distortions and folds of the object, forcing the sensory data toward a more decisive and vigorous expressiveness. The application of color follows the same line: the brushstroke is powerful, almost gestural, confirming the Expressionist vigor. Within the power of color, sensory data dissolve, and object and space merge into a single whole in a highly evocative image.
Alberto Casarotti was born in Verona in 1906 and passed away in Montalto di Rivoli in 1991. He received his artistic training in Milan, where in the 1930s he studied under Arturo Martini, Carrà, Manzù, De Chirico, and other artists who exhibited at the Il Milione gallery during those years. 1942 was a pivotal year when, after attending the Brera Academy for a period, the painter joined the "Corrente" group and became friends with Renato Birolli. With his first official exhibition in 1945 at the Santa Redegonda gallery, Casarotti immediately achieved success with both the public and critics. Among his various participations in events and exhibitions, we also recall his two appearances at the Venice Biennale (1950 and 1985) and the major retrospective held in 1990 at the Palazzo della Gran Guardia in Verona.
