Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships can be considered part of the genre scene group, that is, the representation of an episode of daily life that, apparently, has no significant elements. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships, or other boats, outside the historical context of a naval battle, begins from the 17th and 18th centuries, with the fascination brought by travel and exploration of the new continents. In this case, the artist Tatari proposes this popular subject in an interpretation in which abstract language blends with the figurative.
In this painting, Tatari steps out of his usual figurativism to reach one of his experimental peaks, arriving at a type of composition that borders on abstraction. In art history, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative or abstract stylistic currents. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that has a connection with phenomenal reality but, at the same time, is full of hidden and symbolic meanings, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism or Expressionism are emblematic stylistic currents in having interpreted reality in a conceptual sense with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In this work, however, it is evident that Tatari was rather inspired by a cubist-style deconstruction of reality. The subjects, in fact, are the result of an intersection of colored planes that reconstruct reality with the geometric rationality and the lively irony of a Paul Klee. The mysterious appearance of the female figure on the left confirms the magical and symbolic atmosphere of the entire scene. On the other hand, the very title of the work is very allusive in this sense.
Abdul Rahem Tatari is a painter of Syrian origin whose art is mainly inspired by ethnic-style subjects that he represents with the spontaneity of a naive language. In some cases, he pushes towards a more abstract experimentation, based on colorful geometric compositions.
