A.Pascal - In the Woods

Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a research into space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then on atmospheric rendering, in the Cinquecento; up to the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The style of the artist A. Pascal is highly recognizable: its main characteristic consists in resolving a figurative representation in a stylistic register with strongly expressionistic connotations. We can appreciate, in fact, how the representation of the scene is executed by exploiting the expressive potential of color. The drawing structure crumbles into a highly synthetic depiction. The pictorial surface transforms into an iridescent impasto of a dynamic chromaticism made of bright and light-filled tones. The brushstroke is extremely rapid, aimed at recording on the canvas, with immediacy, every single fragment of changing reality. For this reason, Pascal's brushstroke is extremely calligraphic, very thin, made of rapid flourishes that, while immediately reporting sensory data, also guarantee an interpretation of a strongly lyrical character.

The artist A. Pascal, as we can see from the analysis of his works, links up with a post-impressionistic pictorial trend. Indeed, in his artistic practice, the immediacy typical of a conception of painting en plein air combines with the will to go beyond the simple sensory data, to reach a representation of reality already of an expressionistic type.
