Biography
Anna Spano was born in Nardò in 1967 and, from a very young age, developed a self-taught artistic practice which, after her school years, became a concrete anchor to hold on to: she takes on commissions, portraits and sacred subjects, building a deep and human relationship with her clients.
Her work always begins with an idea, fixed in a preliminary sketch that guides the technical and compositional choices, before evolving freely on the canvas.
Influenced by painting as the construction of light and shadow, and by a symbolic and chromatic imagery that recalls De Chirico, Dalí and Chagall, she uses colour as a primary emotional element. In the past she favoured monochrome solutions and strong chiaroscuro contrasts; today she seeks depth through layered, scenographic structures that invite the viewer's gaze to enter the work.
The creative process is, for her, an all-encompassing experience: when she paints, she enters a sort of vortex, losing all perception of time and space, experiencing creation as an intense physical and mental act, almost carnal. Each work contains fragments of her life, like inner stills from a precise existential moment, reflecting a complex and multifaceted personality. Her works do not offer themselves to an immediate reading: the meaning is often veiled and intimate, because it is deeply rooted in identity. For Anna Spano, art is hope, a saving force that always opens onto the possibility of light, love and rebirth.
