Biography
'The cities of Mattii are all traced back to outskirts where one never arrives and from which one never departs': these are the words of art critic Cristina Acidini in describing the art of Fabio Mattii. A Sienese painter born in 1942, he received a classical education before graduating in Law. His artistic life began as a self-taught practice, before he attended the figure and nude course at the Accademia di Firenze.
His painting is very personal. The suburban streets he depicts take shape through the relationship between matter and light, in the absolute silence of his matter-based painting. The human presence is faint when set against the anonymous architecture looming over the street. The few figures we find seem disoriented as they walk beneath the high walls. The only clear white note comes from a blank sheet of paper on the ground. The light that this single white sheet brings into the work can represent the hope people have of escaping a peripheral and industrial reality of the big cities.
As an artist, he boasts numerous group and solo exhibitions at regional and national level.
