Biography

My stage name, Gabriel de Gaudi, is a tribute to my birthplace: Montegaudio di Pesaro. From the very beginning of my life I have always considered myself a creative person, starting from my school years, when my decorated paper aeroplanes were eagerly sought after by my classmates, and continuing into my youth, when I expressed myself by decorating my motorcycles. After graduating in Geology, more to satisfy a wish of my father's than out of conviction, at the end of the 1980s I finally graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino, fulfilling my primal desire. It was at that moment that my artistic journey began. Initially, trying to orchestrate my way of creating works, I lost myself in abstract and philosophical hypotheses; then I finally understood that making art meant bringing out my true self, that is, finding the exact symbiosis between my way of working and my way of thinking, always striving never to betray myself. From then until the end of the 1980s, I took part in three editions of the Progetto Borderline, curated by the critic Andrea del Guercio, at the Conventino di Monteciccardo. This cycle of exhibitions was my first important milestone, both for the works I produced and for the confrontation with important artists, and it was also a human experience in which I understood my true mission. I realised that being an artist is like being a hermit, someone who devotes his whole life to it, because art burns inside you, keeps you awake, constantly carries your thoughts away, and you cannot do without it. I then had confirmation that the first great work of an artist is to bring out his true nature. At the end of the 1990s I moved to my current studio in Montegaudio, where to this day I meet myself every single day. For a long time those encounters were too brief, so much so that sometimes my ideas slipped away from me, because in art what matters is not so much the realisation of the idea but the exact moment in which the idea is born, its colour at that precise moment. It was then that I began to use writing as a means of fixing my thoughts, so as not to lose a single fragment of them, as if the idea were poetry in motion. Later I met various critics, exhibition curators and publishers, I held exhibitions in Europe, and I installed permanent sculptures in public spaces and private galleries. All the critical texts can be read in my catalogues, published by the publishing house Edimond, later Luoghi interiori di Città di Castello. In the early 2000s I was very active in Germany, staging several exhibitions at the Galleria Van der Koelen in Mainz and Ludwigshafen. After meeting the critic Elmar Zorn, I set up exhibitions and works in Munchen, Colonia, Manheim, Dusseldorf and other cities, with introductions by Dieter Ronte, director of the Museo d'arte contemporanea di Bonn (2001), David Galloway (2010) and Pierre Restany (2001); their texts can be read on my website www.gabrieldegaudi.com. I will always remain here, until the end, because an artist is always at war with his own self, with others, with his works... an artist chases the genesis of his own ideas, must strive to be the promoter of himself, get lost and then rise again, chasing the wind, only to come to rest on the top of a leaf. In these very recent years, in which exhibitions are also held online, I have taken part in two international exhibitions: Covimetry, curated by Mark Starel at the BWA gallery in Ostrowiec, Poland, in December 2020, and Le Ali della Libertà, in 2021, at the Istituto Cervantes in São Paulo, Brazil, curated by Dalva Bertelli and Fernando Durao. In 2023 several exhibitions linked to the Astractura – Napoli movement, conceived by the critic Rosario Pinto, took place, and I began a collaboration with the Bos fine art gallery that continues to this day. During 2024, the last year, I exhibited in New York, at the Atlantic gallery, with 'This is the future of non-objective Art', and in Pesaro, Italian Capital of Culture (2024), with two simultaneous exhibitions, 'Ruvide Armonie'. I am an eclectic artist who does not repeat himself. In my works, what matters is the idea, and I rely on the expressive medium that I believe is best suited to give it voice; therefore, my means of expression range from sculpture to painting, and also photography and video.
