Cesare Buffa

Born in the Marche region into a family with strong moral and religious values, Cesare Buffa grew up in a cultured and rigorous environment, deeply shaped by his mother, a secondary school headteacher and a gifted painter. After graduating in law and pursuing a military career that led him to become a captain of the Alpini in the reserve, Buffa followed his most authentic instinct: the artistic one. It was thanks to an easel given to his mother that he discovered painting, and shortly afterwards he began to exhibit. His first exhibition, sponsored in 1974 by the Cassa di Risparmio di Fermo, met with considerable success and marked the beginning of a complex expressive journey. Painter, poet and writer, Buffa is distinguished by a language that combines spirituality, ethical tension and visionary power. For him, art becomes a means of revelation and denunciation: a form of truth that challenges time, society and the superstructures that oppress humankind. His thinking, which he himself calls "Buffa Pensiero", is a radical vision of the human condition and of the world. It proposes the abolition of money, economics and property as instruments of power and inequality, in the name of a new social order founded on resources, merit and divine will. A utopia? Perhaps. Yet in his writings, as in his paintings, there emerges a sincere urgency, a profound conviction that change is both possible and necessary. His painterly style is a vivid expression of this vision: a material, intense painting, often executed on unconventional supports such as polystyrene. Themes such as light, the sun, creation, the nightmare of modern man, spirituality and energy run through all of his work. Some titles alone evoke his poetics: "Il Segno", "Ondate di Sole", "Il Muro Metafisico", "Vetrata di Cristallo Fracassata dalla Vita", "Spirito", "Piccoli uomini confusi e smarriti", "Falciatrice". These works are both cry and prayer, thought embodied in matter. Since 2004, some of his works have formed part of the collections of the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna di Roma, as confirmed by an official letter from the Ministero dei Beni Culturali. In 2015, one of his paintings was chosen as the symbol of the Esposizione Universale di Milano. The Uffizi in Florence have also shown interest in his work, confirming growing attention towards an artist who stands outside the conventions, yet is rooted in a powerful and necessary vision. His painting has been the subject of critical reflection by scholars such as Giuseppe Pende and Cesare Caselli, who have highlighted its symbolic force and spiritual tension. In a world that Buffa perceives as chained to materialist and destructive logics, art represents for him an act of resistance and redemption. Every work, every word, every colour springs from an urgency: that of reminding us that there exists a greater truth, a primordial light that humankind has forgotten but can still rediscover.
