Biography
Caterina Ruggeri is an artist who works between Como and Lugano. In 2004, she chose to move from canvas to Corten as the support for her paintings. The artist paints the Corten sheet, exposes it to the elements for several months, and allows the rust to develop naturally. This process becomes an integral part of the work. Ruggeri then returns to the piece and repaints it to give it a new meaning, one that reflects the force and dramatic tension of her initial idea. In this way, her Corten works become a genuine creative process, in which the iron itself becomes a living material, capable of recording the passing of time.
Her works are distinguished by dense, gestural brushstrokes, in which the force of the mark is an essential element. Her attention to light is evident, also through her numerous journeys to the East, which have enriched her artistic vision. The choice of Corten, especially in large formats, reflects her desire to engage with the material in a profound way, giving rise to works that explore time and nature.
After her works have been exhibited outdoors, the artist uses a blocking agent to halt the rusting process. She then paints mainly with water-based enamels or acrylics, concluding each piece with a self-sealing varnish that preserves and seals the work.
Her creations are for the most part abstract, but they are influenced by the natural landscape, particularly the sea and the mountains. The colours she chooses vary according to the season and her state of mind: she favours darker tones in more introspective periods, while in spring her works are enriched with brighter colours. Turquoise, in particular, is a colour that recurs often in her work.
Caterina Ruggeri has exhibited her works in numerous exhibitions in Italy and Switzerland. She has a studio in Como, where she develops her artistic research, and a gallery in Como where she shows her work.
