The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The work is of excellent pictorial quality, evident in the strength of the brushstrokes and the color, which are the key elements of the representation. In this painting, Caprile takes the Impressionist component of his pictorial language to its extreme, creating an extraordinary view with an immediate and concise character. As previously mentioned, it is primarily the brushstrokes that determine the quality of the work, with their remarkable structural value. The broad brushstrokes are arranged on different planes, delineating the volumes of the rocks and buildings. In this exploration of color, Caprile almost seems to approach a post-Impressionist style.

Vincenzo Caprile was a Neapolitan painter, born in 1856 and died in 1936. He is a typical representative of the Neapolitan school of painting between the 19th and 20th centuries, characterized by landscapes and genre scenes with an academic flavour but characterised by an extraordinary pictorial modernity that draws inspiration from Impressionism. This is the same work as that of Domenico Morelli and Gabriele Smargiassi, under whom Caprile trained, adhering to the School of Resina. Another important component in his pictorial language was the teaching of the Palizzi brothers.
