the-wise-il-saggio
the wise (the wise)

I took this photo over twenty years ago in India, near a temple in Manali, in the foothills of Nepal. "Jah people," "the secret of the Mongol," or "sabedoria," then I chose to title it "the wise."
To describe this work, I reproduce below part of the review by art critic Ugo Bongarzoni:
Using the palette knife oil painting technique most suited to him, he vitally describes the difference, or rather the dual coexistence, in religion and human philosophy, of two fundamental states: that of perfection and absolute balance, identified with divinity or a state of grace attainable by man, and that of imperfection and imbalance, well known and experienced daily by all mankind. The wise, spiritual man in the image, of Eastern faith and ethnicity, holds a mala in his lap, made up of 108 beads, a sacred number in Tibetan culture used to repeat the mantra, and seems to be tormented and meditating on this imperfection.
he, as a man, is a symbol of it but he is also a symbol of human wisdom that seeks to amend itself from its finite state to reach a higher state, represented by the artist in the upper part of the work through colors that, in the Eastern tradition, are identified with perfection, the divine and the state of grace of the human soul.
upper part which in the drawing appears to split from the original unity precisely to reiterate this concept of cosmic duality.
