The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the materials with which they compose their works.

While the final result of these two works by Maurizio Pio Rocchi can be effectively defined as Informal, we are faced with a painter closely tied to the sensory reality. Indeed, Rocchi's starting point in developing his paintings is Nature itself. The artist focuses on the study of flowers or landscapes, honing in on specific details in the execution of the work with the intent of translating their true essence to the canvas. Rocchi's approach somehow resembles the exponents of the "Last Naturalism" movement, who macroscopically enlarged plant elements, thus arriving at Informalism. This influence is particularly evident in the first painting, where the subject is derived from an enlargement of the petals and corolla, and the transparent glaze technique allows Rocchi to further liberate his gestures. The flower form is preserved, but in a new entity that finds no correspondence in sensory data, being a pure expression of the artist's perception. We note, however, a desire to develop the object in the third dimension, with a hint of plasticity through folds and overlaps. The second painting, however, denotes a reworking of the landscape theme; Rocchi seeks to represent a view, yet transfigures its perception with elements typical of Informal poetics. In particular, in this case, it is the sign that takes center stage, both in the enigmatic presence of hermetic symbols and in the more vivid presence of the written word. Even the elements of nature themselves, the sun or vegetation, take on a symbolic connotation, while space is rendered through a gestural layering in which the written phrases are incorporated into the dense pictorial hatching.

Maurizio Pio Rocchi lives and works in Tuscania.
