Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Typically, the interpretation of this subject is similar for all artists who tackle it: the clown appears with his makeup designed to evoke laughter and hilarity, but instead displays a melancholic expression. This contrast is intended to spark an empathetic dialogue with the viewer.

Manuel Campus's art is characterized by expressive faces, strong personalities, and popular traits. The painter has succeeded in creating his own poetics from the grim stares and frowning faces. These are the rugged faces of social outcasts, but Campus manages to sublimate them with his own expressionistic interpretation. The artist implements a process of formal synthesis based on a linear rhythm of composition. Plasticity is understated, and very little room is left for spatial depth. The compositions are always in tune with a color palette of brown tones that evoke lived-in influences.

Manuel Campus is an artist of Sardinian origin, born in Domus De Maria in 1928, but lives and works in Bazzano Inferiore, near Spoleto.
