Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany.

In this painting, we can appreciate how Gunther Rechn's style closely resembles an expressionism that vigorously synthesizes his subjects, leaving them in an anonymity that almost draws them into the realm of informality. This approach is also reminiscent, in some ways, of Francis Bacon's style, in which bodies and faces are constructed with brushstrokes that, in pursuit of maximum expressive effect, disregard distortions and distortions of phenomenological reality. In this context, the brushstrokes and the application of color are crucial, fundamental to the construction of the subjects. The work is structured as a polyptych with four vertical panels and another square polyptych divided into four sections. In each section, a character stands out in its own space, which is completely decontextualized, also delineated with highly expressive brushstrokes.

Gunther Rechn was born in Lodz, Poland, in 1944. He lives and works in Cottbus, Germany. His artistic training took place primarily in Halle, where he studied industrial design. In 1947, he officially became a painter and printmaker. His works have been exhibited in numerous European cities (Leipzig, Halle, Nuremberg, Berlin, Dresden, Rostock, Cottbus, Frankfurt, Vichy, Sofia, Warsaw, and Moscow). In Italy, he is a well-known artist, especially in the Grosseto area, but exhibitions of his work have also been held in L'Aquila, Sulmona, and Rome.
