ezio-farinelli-9
Ezio Farinelli - Armor

In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In this work by Ezio Farinelli, a subject dear to him returns: the fantastical armor of his Don Quixote and his female figures. In this case, however, it is the armor itself that takes center stage, developed in a highly refined and original composition.

In this painting, too, the prevailing language in Ezio Farinelli's work returns to a concrete figurative style that dissolves into a refined synthesis of color. In this case, however, the subject achieves its own autonomy, developing according to complex principles of abstraction. The armor breaks down into geometric figures and expands its forms in a non-unique space that owes much to Cubism. The artist also further imbues the image with symbolism by inserting heterogeneous and alienating elements, such as an enormous claw and a piece of chain.

Ezio Farinelli was born in 1937. He began his painting career in Rome in the 1960s. Initially, his artistic language drew on Impressionism and then the Expressionist avant-garde. Then, in the 1970s and 1980s, he moved decisively toward a more classical style drawing on the Renaissance tradition. This painter's most recurring themes are the Roman suburbs, female figures set in abstract, dreamy landscapes, and Don Quixote. Ezio Farinelli has been featured in important group exhibitions alongside Brindisi, Guttuso, Annigoni, Maccari, Levi, De Chirico, Sironi, Boccioni, Cagli, Campigli, Sassu, and others.
