armando-de-stefano-senza-titolo
Armando de Stefano - Untitled

The work has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany.

The work is a perfect example of the style adopted by Armando De Stefano during the 1950s. It is clearly a work with a marked expressionist influence, as can be seen from the remarkable process of synthesis applied to the subjects, which are reduced to essential forms to the point of verging on abstraction. Even the color palette, with its bright and violent, decidedly anti-naturalistic hues, was chosen based on the need to express an emotional situation. However, unlike the more traditional expressionist avant-gardes, in which the line and outline of the figures played a key role, in De Stefano's expressionism, this role is fulfilled by the material. The surface of the painting is, in fact, covered with a thick, rough layer of paint.

Armando De Stefano was born in Naples in 1926. Early in his career, he and other Neapolitan artists founded the "Gruppo Sud" (Southern Group), adhering to a predominantly social-realistic style of painting. In the 1950s, his artistic research focused on abstract, material expressionism. From the 1960s onward, De Stefano returned to figurative painting, dedicating himself to major cycles inspired by the paintings of the past, such as The Inquisition, Masaniello, and The Neapolitan Revolution. He has participated several times in the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial, and has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including those at the MADRE museum and the Palazzo delle Arti in Naples.
