It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi.

A typical example of one of Genoese painter Amedeo Merello's favorite subjects, a still life featuring mushrooms. The artist's interpretation of this subject is also typical, with a meticulous pursuit of naturalistic rendering, almost approaching hyperrealism. Every detail is captured on canvas by the artist, and his excellent technique allows him to capture the quality of the materials, the elements, and the effects of the light falling on them. It is precisely the impact of light, which generates subtle painterly effects, that keeps Merello from cold objectivity and instead achieves a delicate realism.

Amedeo Merello was a Genoese painter from 1890 to 1979. Equipped with an excellent academic education, he initially focused on religious subjects. However, his true calling was painting from life, which he mastered with extraordinary skill, both in landscapes and still lifes, thanks in part to his post-Impressionist heritage and his extraordinary use of color. He participated in numerous exhibitions, especially in Genoa, Savona, and Turin, but also in various events throughout Italy and abroad.
